Addictions/Chemical Dependency
Chemical dependency also known as addiction to many or more recently referred to as a severe substance use disorder is a chronic illness. It is not a moral issue or a character flaw. According to the 2016 Surgeon General Report (Facing Addiction in America), evidence supports that addiction has many features and characteristics similar to other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma, to name a few. Like many medical conditions/diseases that we as a society have become familiar with, addiction is also influenced by our genetic makeup, chronic, influenced by developmental and environmental conditions, behavioral, and can be influenced by social conditions. Often times, chemical dependency is a co-occurring disorder, meaning that other mental health issues may be a part of the equation and will need to be addressed simultaneously.
Addiction and substance use/abuse affects millions of individuals, families and communities. The treatment of addiction is very individual and requires a community of professionals, family members, peers and others who are available, understanding and supportive through the process. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance misuse, abuse (binge using or heavy use) or substance dependency... help is available.
I strive to help individuals and family members in building a supportive network to aid in their individual recovery process. Two of the most common factors that significantly interfere with recovery efforts are shame and feeling all alone. If you are questioning whether your relationship with substances is problematic in your life or if you know substances have interfered with the quality of life you want to live, feel free to call for an appointment to discuss treatment options and availability. No one should have to face this disorder alone! For more information about addiction you can check out the resources I have listed on my resources page.
